As from November 1, 2024, you can choose which hardware you use for your internet connection. BIPT decided this on September 26, 20231.
In that decision, BIPT established the physical network connection point for fixed networks at so-called point A.
As a result, modems and routers are part of the terminal equipment and can therefore be freely chosen by the end user for internet and VoIP services.
This does not mean that you can just use anything: the devices must meet specific characteristics and technical specifications.
Attention: the free modem/router choice does not apply to business agreements2.
What are the technical specifications?
The technical specifications that we provide below are those that we have received from Proximus.
The goal is to assure the best possible network compatibility in case you choose to use your own equipment after the network termination point instead of the equipment supported by edpnet (or Proximus).
For a better customer experience and to avoid impact on the edpnet or Proximus network, including impact on other end users, it is required that the equipment used on the internet connection complies to the Proximus specifications.
In this context, edpnet will not perform any validation or testing of equipment that is not directly supported by edpnet.

What if there is a technical problem?
Edpnet cannot guarantee that your internet connection will always work properly if you use hardware that is not supported by edpnet.
Read the manufacturer's manual carefully before beginning with the installation. You are solely responsible for any damage incurred during and as a result of the installation of hardware that is not supported by edpnet. We will not provide any help or support in connecting / setting up hardware that is not supported by edpnet.
Here are a few steps that you can take to diagnose the cause of a problem with your internet connection:
- Check all your connections and then restart your own modem/router.
- If the problem persists, please contact the edpnet Helpdesk. They will send you a suitable test device that you can use temporarily. Please note that the delivery of the test device may take a few days, depending on the speed at which Bpost works.
- If the problem is resolved, it means the problem is with your own device. You must then contact the manufacturer. You can then choose whether to return the edpnet test device to us or purchase it.
- However, if the problem persists, keep the edpnet test device connected to your internet line and contact our Helpdesk again so that the technical problem with your internet connection can be further investigated.
